Breast care

The management of conditions and diseases affecting the breast is a highly specialised medical field dealing with, amongst other, breast cancer, benign or non-cancerous breast conditions and other breast diseases affecting both women and men. Tremendous advances have been made in this field of medicine in the last decade or so, especially with regard to the diagnosis and treatment of breast cancer.

Specialised breast care centres at Netcare hospitals

The first breastcare centre of excellence in the private sector in South Africa was established in 2001 by Netcare and Prof Carol-Ann Benn, a renowned specialist surgeon and breast disease specialist, at Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg. 

In April 2017, the Netcare Breast Care Centre of Excellence at Netcare Milpark Hospital was granted a three-year, full accreditation by the National Accreditation Program for Breast Centers (NAPBC), administered by the American College of Surgeons. The centre received 100% compliance to 29 standards, and is one of only three breast care centres outside the USA that have been accredited by the NAPBC. A specialised breast care centre has also been established at Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital in Cape Town. The breast care centres at Netcare hospitals follow a holistic approach in the management of breast conditions and diseases, with multidisciplinary teams of medical and healthcare professionals involved in the diagnosis, clinical assessment, counselling, treatment, breast reconstruction and patient support. A further focus is on preventative initiatives including awareness and education.
